What your hotel won’t tell you

Several readers asked us about hotel rates and earning miles. One of them is a member of the Fairmont Hotels’ frequent guest program called Fairmont president's club. He has opted for earning miles rather than hotel points.

Fairmont San Jose
Recently, he stayed in a Fairmont hotel at the senior rate. However, he did not receive frequent flyer miles even though his Fairmont account showed it was a qualifying stay. When asked, the Fairmont president's club let him know that it considers the senior rate a discounted rate that does not qualify for miles.

We contacted the Fairmont, which confirmed that the senior rate does not qualify for miles at Fairmont. Our reader is now considering switching to another hotel chain. Therefore, he asked us at which hotels the senior rate qualifies for miles.

We asked 4 major hotels – Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and Starwood - about their policies. However, they did not want to respond. Thus, they won’t tell you whether the senior rate will earn you miles or not.

However, according to some readers’ experiences the senior rate does qualify for miles at the Hilton. Moreover, this is the only hotel where you can earn both hotel points and frequent flyer miles for each stay.
