Following the collapse of the Soviet Union the former Soviet Republic of Estonia immediately regained its independence. The Estonian government founded the national carrier Estonian Air as early as on December 1, 1991. In 1996, it privatized 66% of the shares. Currently, SAS owns 49% of the shares.
Estonia and SAS are discussing the future of Estonian Air. Last year SAS proposed the Estonian government to buy out its 49% holding in Estonian Air.
Recently, the Estonian government said it wants to continue its cooperation with SAS. However, it does not rule out the possibility that it could buy its airline back for one kroon (€0.06 or $0.09), or for the amount that SAS has lent to Estonian Air to cover its operating costs.
Estonian Air has announced it will start code share flights with KLM 6 times per week on the route Tallinn-Vilnius-Amsterdam from February 12, 2010.
Initially, KLM refused to confirm or deny the announcement. But Ilona Eskelinen, Estonian Air’s director of public relations, insisted that it was true. Finally, the fourth time we asked KLM they confirmed the cooperation with Estonian Air.
However, we tried to book a flight Amsterdam-Tallinn on KLM’s web site. The only possibility was on Czech Airlines, with a plane change in Prague. Thus, even though KLM reluctantly recognized the code share agreement with Estonian Air, they do not offer travelers the possibility to book these code share flight on KLM’s web site.
