Admission to the USA a bit less bureaucratic

So far, travelers to the USA had to submit their details to the US authorities 3 times:

1. From early 2009, all Visa Waiver Program (VWP) travelers to the USA are required to obtain a travel authorization via the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to their departure. This authorization remains valid for 2 years or – if shorter – until your passport will expire.

2. Travelers need to provide most of the ESTA information again plus their address and contact details in the USA when they check in for their flights.

3. VWP travelers need to submit this information for the third time on arrival in the USA by completing the green I-94W form, which they are required to give to the immigration officer.

However, this red tape is being reduced a little bit as the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has begun a transition to paperless processing for VWP travelers who have obtained a travel authorization.

Most airlines now receive and validate messages pertaining to the traveler’s ESTA status as part of the passengers’ boarding status. As a result, VWP travelers entering the USA will no longer need to fill out the green I-94W form nor be given a departure coupon in their passport. So far, they had to submit this coupon on departure.

CBP has activated the automated processing for US airports on a rolling basis. Automated processing will be completed at all US international airports by the end of July 2010.

However, the paper form I-94W will continue to be required for VWP travelers arriving without an approved ESTA travel authorization.
