A flying car

Motorists stuck in a traffic jam dream about flying in their car. The Transition ® Roadable Aircraft, or ‘Flying Car’, makes their dream come true.

It is classified as a light sport aircraft. Therefore, it requires a sport pilot certificate to fly. This type of certificate requires only 20 hours of flying time. Watch the video.

The vehicle has received an exemption from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to allow a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds

(650 kg). This additional weight accommodates the structure and equipment necessary for compliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards which are not found in Light Sport Aircraft.

The vehicle is designed to drive on public roadways and park in a standard garage. Its maker is Terrafugia, which is based in Woburn, Massachusetts. Terrafugia - Latin for ‘escape from land’ - claims that the vehicle can transform from a car that can hit a highway speed of 65 m/h to a winged aircraft in 30 seconds.

The plane version can cruise at about 115 m/h (185 km/h) and cover about 400 miles (644 km) before needing a refill of regular unleaded gas.

The vehicle’s price is expected to be around $200,000 (€163,000) and deliveries could start in 2011, assuming the vehicle passes crash tests.
