Fewer accidents in 2009

Airline safety improved in 2009, International Air Transport Association (IATA) data show. Despite several serious crashes, the accident rate for Western-built jet aircraft was the second lowest in aviation history.

Measured in hull losses per million flights the accident rate was 0.71, which is equal to 1 accident for every 1.4 million flights. Only in 2006 the accident rate was lower (0.65).

In 2009, 2.3 billion passengers flew safely on 35 million flights.
US Airways
There were 90 accidents worldwide, while 19 involved Western-built jet aircraft. The number of fatalities was 685 worldwide. Pilot handling was noted as a contributing factor in 30% of all accidents.

North America (0.41) and Europe (0.45) performed better than the global average. Africa has the worst rate of the world: 9.94. African carriers account for only 2% of global traffic, but for 26% of global western-built jet hull losses.

In general, however, aviation remains the safest way to travel.
